This two-storey garden suite with a full basement is nearing completion, thoughtfully integrated into a Toronto backyard and designed to perform within some of the city’s most restrictive zoning conditions.
With 1,270 sq. ft. of above-grade living space and an additional 645 sq. ft. below grade, the project maximizes usable area while maintaining a light, open feel. Toronto’s setback and privacy bylaws limited conventional window placements, prompting a design solution that draws daylight from above. Strategically placed skylights flood the interior with natural light, creating bright, generous spaces despite minimal exterior wall openings.
Conceived as a flexible secondary dwelling, the suite was designed to adapt over time — supporting extended family living, rental potential, or temporary occupancy while the main residence undergoes renovation. The result is a compact yet highly livable home that balances regulatory precision with comfort, adaptability, and architectural clarity.
